The design of efficient yet lightweight constructions capable of withstanding intensive dynamic loading and the development of an efficient protection from hazardous events, as blast and impact, continue to present engineering challenges.
The sandwich-like structures with soft core materials represent a class of efficient engineering solutions due to the capability of these structures to absorb a significant amount of energy and thus to mitigate blast and impact. Their response, however, is strongly influenced by the characteristics of the core materials. From this viewpoint, the mechanical properties’ characterization and the mechanisms of the load transfer trough the core become essential. Significant research efforts have been made to bring a better understanding of the behavior of soft materials and a big progress has been made in the experimental, analytical and numerical methods of analysis.
The present talk is focused on some aspects of the phenomena, deformation mechanisms at macro scale and on the modelling of particular types of core materials when applying quasi-static and high velocity dynamic loading. Comments will be made on the role of the micro- and meso-scale mechanisms in the dynamic compression of cellular materials being an important part of the engineering design. Some examples of the application of sandwich-like structures will be presented when comparing the response of these structures with the response of their monolithic counterparts.
Fiber-Metal-Laminates (FML) comprising metal sheets and composite plies is another type of smart materials used in the transportation systems which could be subjected to hazardous loading. The response of FML panels to a highly localized blast loading will be briefly discussed to reveal the role of the force transfer in the damage of these structures.
